National Day to Make College Affordable: 1/7/07

Visit this link for details: http://campusprogress.org/common/1352/national-day-to-make-college-affordable-1707

Just a few months ago, young voters
came out in force and helped elect a new Congress. Now, we deserve the
attention of this new Congress on one of the biggest issues we face: the rising
cost of higher education.

Although college costs are spiking every year, the last Congress pushed through
massive cuts in student aid.

We’re lobbying now to call on the new Congress to make good on its promise to
help students and young people. Nancy Pelosi is organizing an agenda for the
first one hundred hours of new Congressional leadership. Legislation to make
college more affordable should be included in that agenda. We helped to put
these new lawmakers in office, and it's time for them to promote opportunity
for us all by making college more affordable!

On January 11th, 2007, our national coalition will hold a press event and lobby
Congress at the Capitol in DC, while people across the country call on their
representatives to make college affordable now.

Join us by telling your representative to cut the interest rates on student
loans in half now as a first step towards making college affordable.

BC Seeks a Balance in Airing of Views

Boston College is giving its administrators the right to reject student-recruited speakers if their views or opinions conflict with the school's Catholic and Jesuit identity and another speaker to offer the Catholic viewpoint cannot be found.

The policy change in the student guidebook underscores the challenge facing BC as it seeks to maintain a Catholic identity even as it attracts a more diverse student body from across the nation. The move has angered some faculty and students who say the policy threatens free speech on campus.

CDM Issue Focus: Election 2006

College Democrats of Massachusetts Appreciate Romney's Gift

BOSTON , December 14—Governor Mitt Romney finally did something in the best interest of Massachusetts today. He declared he would not be running for reelection for Governor of Massachusetts in 2006, indicating to many, that he is continuing his plans to become the Republican candidate for the Presidential race in 2008.

In an election which produces a winner or loser, Romney would end up looking foolish in either outcome. In 2006, his hope of reelection looks as bleak as his popularity level among Massachusetts voters. If somehow, Romney were to win, he would be stuck in a four-year term, placing him in difficult and inopportune position to declare candidacy for President. As manipulative as his decision sounds, to his credit, Romney is finally being realistic about his political career in Massachusetts and confessing his true ambitions.

CDM Issue Focus: GLBT Rights

BOSTON COLLEGE BANS GAY DANCE AND HIV/AIDS FUNDRAISER

ADMINISTRATION CENSORS GLBT STUDENTS ONLY MONTHS AFTER ADOPTING A MORE GAY FRIENDLY NON-DISCRIMINATION POLICY.

( Boston, MA )- Following months of planning on the part of the GLBT community, Boston College has decided to cancel a planned "AIDS Benefit Gala, A Celebration of Diversity" which was to be held on December 9. The Dean for Student Development, Robert Sherwood, with the support of the Vice-President for Student Affairs, Cheryl Presley, abruptly informed organizers of the decision. This came as a shock to the GLBT community and other Faculty, Staff, and Students of Boston College, as the University recently adopted a new notice of non-discrimination committing itself to maintaining a welcoming environment for students, regardless of sexual orientation.

Medford , MA — November 6, 2005 —“It was no trouble getting here,” insisted Senator John Kerry, as he talked about his journey to Tufts University . “We just followed Judge Alito's directions.
