The Obama Administration will no longer be deporting young, undocumented immigrants who were brought into this country by their parents while younger than 16 years-old — and who fit a few other specific criteria. Those who fit this demographic are now eligible to apply for work visas – some 800,000 young immigrants.
The College Democrats of Massachusetts commends the President on this announcement and views the decision as a tremendous step towards achieving more humane and fair immigration policy in the United States.
As young Americans ourselves, CDM appreciates the effect this new policy will have on some of our classmates, teammates, neighbors and friends, who, as President Obama so eloquently expressed, “are Americans in their heart, in their minds, in every single way but one: on paper.”
While there is still much work to do with regards to immigration, the significance of this new policy must not be understated. Because of President Obama, 800,000 immigrants, who have positively contributed to our society, can now rest easy without fear of deportation.
